British golfer Charlie Hull he had a tough opening round at the 2024 Summer Olympics, but not because he wasn’t allowed to smoke on the course.
Hull, 28, who went viral after being photographed with a cigarette hanging from her mouth at the US Women’s Open in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, back in May, shot a round of 81 (+9) at Le Golf National on Wednesday, August 7. .
However, when asked if the Paris 2024 health and safety guidelines – which ban smoking on the golf course – were responsible, Hull gave another reason.
After his round, Hull told reporters that he “fell out of the shower before I took my flight.” Hull said the fall caused “arthritis now in my shoulder.”
Injuries have occurred in recent weeks, forcing Hull to pull out of the Aramco Team Series in London at the start of July.
“It’s like I’m feeling rusty,” Hull explained, “because obviously it’s been five weeks since I last played well in a four-day event.”
Still, despite a tough day on the links, Hull managed to have a sense of humor about it all.
He joked, “I was just telling my agent, I’m frustrated. I wish I hadn’t showered before my flight now.”
When asked if the smoking ban had anything to do with his performance, Hull said, “Absolutely not.”
Ahead of the event, the two-time LPGA Tour champion sang a different tune, saying the ban would “affect his play” because it gives me a bit of a break.
Hull scoffed, “It is what it is.”
In his second round on Thursday, August 8, Hull recovered and shot a 71 (-1). However, given the rough start, his two-day tally of +8 puts him 16 strokes behind the leader. Morgane Metraux from Switzerland.
Unlike regular LPGA events, the Olympic tournament does not have a cutoff line, meaning Hull will still be in contention on the weekend despite being far off the pace.
Before he parted ways with the Olympics, Hull sparked controversy over photos of him smoking earlier this year.
“It was crazy,” Hull said Daily Mail in a story published on Tuesday, August 6. “It’s not really what I expected, but I think it shows that any publicity is good information.”
He continued, “I prefer to do my own golf articles, but I hope it helps attract a few new fans to golf!”
The third round of the women’s stroke-play event continues from Le Golf National on Saturday, August 9.
