There are no more wildfires in the wider Athens area, but officials remain on alert, a senior spokesman for Greece’s fire brigade said.

He told the BBC firefighters would continue to cut down and remain firmly in place.

Light winds and massive emergency response efforts helped control the flames.

But there is still a risk of wildfires due to gusty winds and temperatures rising above 30C (86F) during the day.

One woman died and scores of people – including firefighters – were injured after the fire tore through 100,000 hectares (40,470 hectares) of land. Thousands of local residents have been evacuated.

The huge cloud of smoke that hung over Athens for hours cleared on Tuesday – but the sky was still dark.

Greek authorities are now assessing the damage and preparing compensation schemes for affected residents and businesses.

More than 700 firefighters, 199 and 35 bomber planes are fighting the blaze, which broke out on Sunday afternoon about 35km (22 miles) north of the Greek capital.

On Monday, flames were confirmed in 40 different areas, with some areas seeing flames up to 25m (82ft).

Although the fires have largely subsided, firefighters continue to destroy and maintain a strong presence in the capital area.

The suburbs of Nea Penteli, Vrilissia and Patima Halandriou are among the worst affected areas.

Another resident of Nea Penteli, Marina, describes how she was forced to flee her village in Nea Penteli to a nearby town, but was evacuated a second time as the flames reached there.

“My friend’s house – he almost lost everything: he has no belongings. And when everything happened, even our school burned down. All our memories were there,” he told the BBC.

In Vrilissia, 14 kilometers from the center of Athens, buildings and businesses were engulfed in flames,

The body of a 63-year-old woman was found in a burnt factory near Patima Halandriou.

His colleagues said he was too scared to jump from the building as the flames got closer and he got trapped inside.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis cut short his holidays to return to deal with the crisis.

After activating the EU’s civil protection mechanism, European countries including Italy, France, Serbia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Romania have provided assistance including flights, personnel and aid to Greece.
