The PGA Tour’s Signature Event in Charlotte has new sponsors and, just next season, a new venue.
The Tour announced Tuesday that Truist Financial Corporation will take over sponsorship of the former Wells Fargo tournament in a seven-year deal with the PGA Tour and its regular host venue Quail Hollow Club.
“We are honored to be the title sponsor of the PGA Tour’s Charlotte-based Signature Event and are excited that Philadelphia and Charlotte, two of Truist’s growing markets, will be featured on the PGA Tour,” said Truist Chairman and CEO Bill Rogers. . Press release. “We look forward to working with the PGA Tour to promote this incredible championship event and the profound impact of the Truist community, and to fulfill our mission to inspire and build better lives and communities.”
But, with Quail Hollow set to host the PGA Championship for the second time in 2025, the Tour also announced that the inaugural Truist Championship will be played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course at its usual location, May 5-11, the week before the match. The PGA Championship.
The event has been a mainstay on the PGA Tour calendar since its launch as the Wachovia Championship in 2003 and has featured past winners such as Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa and Rory McIlroy, -Xander Schuauffele passing by. the final round to win this year’s event.
Wells Fargo has been the title sponsor since 2011 but announced last December that it would not renew its sponsorship after the 2024 event, the second time as a $20 million signature event.
All but two of the tournament programs were played at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. The 2017 tournament was held at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC, before Quail Hollow hosted its first PGA Championship. The 2022 edition was held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, outside Washington, DC.
The 2025 Truist Championship will mark the debut of Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course on the PGA Tour, but the club has no shortage of championship pedigree. The 1922 AW Tillinghast design was restored in 2014 by Keith Foster and has since hosted the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship, the 2016 Senior Players Championship and the US Amateur Four-Ball Championship last May.
At the 2016 Seniors, strong winds and strong conditions saw no player break through 72 holes as Bernhard Langer produced an impressive equalizer to win by one over Miguel Angel Jimenez and Joe Durant at the same time.
The club said no changes are expected to be made to the 7,119-yard, par-70 course other than resurfacing. During the Senior Players, the 517-yard par-4 4th hole was played as the 18th hole as grandstands could not be built near the 18th hole.
The group features a total of 45 holes, including 9-hole St. Martins Course, located in downtown Philadelphia, which previously hosted the 1907 and 1910 US Opens in the 18-hole layout. The Militia Hill course, located in the same Flourtown area as the Wissahickon, is a 2002 Hurdzan/Fry design.
This will be the first PGA Tour event held in the Philadelphia area since the 2022 BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware and the first in Pennsylvania since the same tournament was held in Aronimink in 2018. Pittsburgh’s Oakmont will host the US Open this year, making it the first time two PGA Tour events have been held in the state in the same season since 1978.
