For years, Ultimate Ears has cultivated a reputation for building quality Bluetooth speakers designed for active use, outdoors, even if they’re perfectly suited for a cozy night in. Some of the company’s speakers are designed to simply walk around the pool. , but also in the pond. With colorful designs, large volume buttons, and confusing names, UE speakers are generally durable, portable, and more than capable of supporting a fun event and looking good doing it. The Wonderboom 3, in particular, is known to be one of the best UE speakers for its size and price.

I tested the Wonderboom 3 to see how it holds up and compares to other portables Bluetooth speakers . Here is what I found.

Specifications, price, and availability

The UE Wonderboom 3 is available at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and directly from UE.com. It costs around $100, though you might be able to get it discounted as UE is promoting its new next-generation speaker lineup. Of note is the surround stereo that the Wonderboom 3 offers, setting itself apart from mono Bluetooth speakers. They come in a variety of different colors with silly names that usually mean pink, green, blue, lavender or a combination of beige and green. I tested the black model.

What I liked about the UE Wonderboom 3

Quality sound, beautiful design

Wonderboom 3 delivers impressive, clear, and immersive stereo sound at high volumes. It may not hold a big night party, but it should support a decent-sized gathering in the backyard or park. The stereo setup, with left and right channels, can be quite different because the speaker is smaller, but it helps put the Wonderboom 3 ahead of competitors of similar size and price. The speaker can be paired with another Wonderboom 3, each speaker occupying the left and right channels respectively, allowing for a more enjoyable and complete listening experience.

The wraparound grille also means that sound comes out from all sides, adding a bit of flexibility when in use.

The durable construction and basic protection make the Wonderboom 3 a powerful speaker for outdoor use. It is IP67 rated, giving you the ability to resist rain and splashes. It can be submerged in water for up to 30 minutes, although I wouldn’t recommend testing the Wonderboom 3 this way, mainly because you won’t be able to hear the sound it produces underwater that way. The Wonderboom 3 makeup also offers protection from dust, allowing you to take this speaker to the beach, park, or hike without much worry. It can be dropped from five meters without worrying about damage to its integrity. The Wonderboom 3 certainly feels sturdy too, and while I don’t like throwing the speaker at my friends like people do in the UE commercials for some reason, I don’t mind it falling, falling, or moving around there. used externally.

The Wonderboom 3 has a certain fun feel that goes beyond the sound quality but I enjoy it as a simple person who likes bright color and amazing design.

In terms of portability, I found the sturdy Wonderboom to be just as portable and easy to store as the previous entry in the UE family, if not more so. I really enjoyed the bungee loop fabric that allows you to hang or attach the speaker. The fact that it is colored to match the volume buttons on the speaker is a nice touch.

Of course, it’s also a good-looking speaker, even the black models. The Wonderboom 3 has a certain fun feel that goes beyond the sound quality but I enjoy it as a simple person who likes bright color and amazing design. It helps that beauty doesn’t replace sound quality but is an addition to it.

The Wonderboom 3 controls are simple. The three buttons on the top of the unit are easily programmed, although not very intuitive. The power button is a small, depressed option with a single line of LEDs to indicate whether it’s on or off (not the button I thought would turn on the speaker). The center button is multipurpose: you can play or pause music, skip to the next track, or use it to pair with another speaker. The third button allows you to pair via Bluetooth.

At the bottom of the speaker is an almost hidden feature to use. There is a button that allows you to activate the Outdoor Boost feature, a sound reset designed to improve the sound when you are in an open space without walls and surfaces. The difference in sound isn’t significant, but you’ll definitely notice the boost.

What I don’t like about the Wonderboom 3

Dated connection and slow charging

Of all Wonderboom’s obstacles, one stands out more than the others, in part because of the expectations surrounding electronics. I can accept the lack of powerful bass and a little distortion or discomfort when the volume is set to high. That’s not really confusing for speakers of this size and price.

However, it’s annoying that the Wonderboom 3 still uses a micro USB cable to charge. The speaker comes with a cord, which is handy, but I’d rather not have a bunch of separate cords anymore. Since there are so many products that combine the power and convenience of USB-3, I’d rather have a Wonderboom to use with one so I can easily turn off devices. It’s not much of a problem at home, but it can be annoying when you’re traveling as it might be the only device that needs such a cable.

Annoyingly, the Wonderboom 3 still uses a micro USB cable to charge.

The Wonderboom 3 starts to lose a bit of oomph when you’re out in the open and at a distance. It offers enough crisp and clear sound to fill a group of 15 to 20 people, but it won’t be the heart of a large group in a large venue. And while it can keep that soirée going with a decent battery life of around 14 hours, it takes two hours to fully charge, so make sure you’re ready to go. The lack of fast charging is a challenge, but it’s not a dealbreaker.

The Wonderboom 3 can’t connect to a UE-compatible app, which wasn’t a problem for me, but others might be annoyed. Also remember that it can only connect to other Wonderbooms, not separate UE speaker models.

Ultimate-Ears-UE-Wonderboom-3-bluetooth-speaker-13Should you buy the Wonderboom 3?

The UE Wonderboom 3 is a reliable and robust Bluetooth speaker that serves as an essential companion for anyone looking for a speaker on the go. It can fill a small room inside and work well outside and when you’re on the go, especially if you’re going on a fun trip. The fun look of the design, with its large volume buttons, soft exterior, and color options, also makes it fun to look at and have around for those who care about beauty, like me. It’s worth the investment at the reduced price, and despite the newer models it’s replacing, there’s still value to be had, especially since UE speakers tend to last for years.
