The San Diego Gulls have announced the addition of Dave Barr as an assistant coach.
Barr joins the assistant Chris Sparregoalkeeper coach Jeff Glass and a video coordinator Lucas Hurtt to the head coach Matt McIlvane2024-25 staff.
Barr, 63, spent last season as an assistant coach with the Chicago Wolves. He has spent two seasons (2021-23) as the head coach of the Vienna Capitals in Austria’s top league, and was the head coach of Canada at the 2021 IIHF World U-18 Championship, leading the team to a gold medal.
Barr served as an assistant coach in the NHL for 12 seasons with the Colorado Avalanche (2008-09), Minnesota Wild (2009-11), New Jersey Devils (2011-15), Buffalo Sabers (2015-16), Florida Panthers (2016-17 ) and the San Jose Sharks (2017-20). He was also the head coach and general manager of the Guelph Storm in the Ontario Hockey League from 2003 to 2008, and was an assistant coach in the International Hockey League with Orlando and Houston.
In the AHL, Barr was the general manager of the Houston Eros for two seasons, reaching the Calder Cup championship in 2003.
A native of Toronto, Barr played 16 professional seasons, including 614 games in the NHL with the Boston, NY Rangers, St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit, New Jersey and Dallas. He also skated in 158 games in the AHL with the Erie Blades, Baltimore Skipjacks, Adirondack Red Wings and Utica Devils.
