Ten youths were killed and scores injured after an attack on a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, according to Israeli emergency services.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the rocket landed in the Majdal Shams area of the area.

The strike was the deadliest in the region since clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah escalated when Israel's war with Hamas began in October.

The IDF blamed Hezbollah for the attack but Hezbollah spokesman Mohammad Afif denied “any connection to the Majdal Shams incident”.

“All allegations [of the group’s involvement] they are lies”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was visiting the US, brought his home. He was told by aides on Saturday.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz told Israel's Channel 12 news: “We are facing a tough war.”

The attack follows an Israeli strike in Lebanon that killed four soldiers. Hezbollah fired rockets in response, but denied involvement in the attack on Majdal Shams.

Confirmed video shows crowds of people on the football field and bodies being rushed to waiting ambulances.

Majdal Shams is one of the four villages in the Golan Heights, where about 25,000 Druze people live.

They were offered Israeli citizenship when the Syrian Golan Heights were occupied in 1981, but most refused. They can study and work in Israel, but not vote.
