Sandra Bernhard Reflects On 'Sad' Breakup With Madonna

Sandra Bernhard I can't help but think what it would be like to meet again Madonna almost 30 years after their friendship broke up.
“It would be great, but I mean, I don't know what it would be,” Bernhard, 69, shared on the Tuesday, July 30, episode of the “Dinner's On Me” podcast. “I hate being nostalgic and stuck in that time because it was a great time.”
Bernhard's friendship with Madonna made headlines in the late '80s. One of their most memorable moments together was when they wore the same clothes during their appearance Late Night with David Letterman in 1988.
While fans enjoyed watching the friendship between the two, Bernhard once revealed that they were not on speaking terms in 1992.
“In the late 1980s [was] when I did my one-woman show here in New York and I was friends with her and I did Letterman all the time,” the comedian recalled in a recent podcast interview Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “I mean, everything was new. So, there are times when I go, 'That really hurts me, you know, that we couldn't save our friendship.' I mean I can have it.”
Us Weekly has reached out to Madonna's lawyers for comment on Bernhard's latest comments.
Although it is not clear why the relationship between the two is strained, the comedian previously shed light on why they are no longer seen together.
“We were going out. We can have a really good time, and I think we were a good example of two women who are friends,” said Bernhard. The Wendy Williams Show in 2010. “I would like that to continue for a while [longer]. Some people can't handle that kind of friendship. That's not my style. I like to maintain my friendship throughout my life. … Okay, you know. All is forgiven.”
Years later, Bernhard reiterated that he wasn't down about his relationship with the 65-year-old music star. Instead, he proved that friendships can change over time.
“I saw him years ago,” they said Roseanne alum told Us in 2019. “We're cool with each other, you know. But people move on and you have your life. … I have my job, my life.”
Apart from friendship, Bernhard continues to bring laughs on his high-profile comedy tour. Earlier this month, the actor announced 10 dates for the upcoming December tour. “From the West Coast to the East,” she wrote on Instagram on Friday, July 26. “Let's kick it into high gear!”
As for Madonna, she just wrapped up her Celebration Tour in May with a free concert in Brazil.
