Patrick Mahomes doesn't seem to be a fan of Kermit the Frog – at least when he's dressed as a quarterback.
Mahomes, 28, broke his silence on Friday, July 26, about the Las Vegas Raiders mocking his voice, which some compared to a Muppet, by playing with a Kermit doll wearing his Kansas City Chiefs jersey.
“It is still early in the year. Things like this happen,” Mahomes told reporters when asked about the Raiders joke. “It will be dealt with when it is dealt with.”
This NFL athlete, who has won three Super Bowl Championships, dismissed the incident, explaining that not many people sent him this video. “Everyone allows me to play. They know what I'm like,” Mahomes said. “You don't need to send me something to keep me motivated.”
On Thursday, July 25, the Raiders made headlines while the video is playing in their training camp. In a clip, the rookie safety Trey Taylor he put a Kermit doll in his hand and said, “I'm a dog,” while pretending to be Mahomes. His colleagues could be heard laughing in the background.
This doll, brought by a fan, was wearing a Mahomes Chiefs jersey and a wig similar to his curly hair.
“Raiders have a Patrick Mahomes Kermit the Frog doll in training camp?” former NFL player Robert Griffin III in a tweet after seeing the video. “This man played 10-2 against the Raiders, the Chiefs have won 8 consecutive AFC West titles and he just confirmed that he will play a game he will never forget.”
Under the leadership of Mahomes, the Chiefs have won 10 of the last 12 games against the Raiders, starting in 2018. Kansas City scored 30 touchdowns against the Las Vegas team with Mahomes throwing for 3,573 yards in those games.
However, the Raiders defeated the Chiefs in their last match which was on Christmas Day 2023. These teams will meet again in Week 8 of the 2024 NFL season.
As a defender, Chiefs coach Andy Reid take down Kermit's joke during an interview with CBS Sports on Friday coming out of their training camp.
“Maybe I should say, we don't spend a lot of time here with the dolls,” he explained. “We try to do our job and try to be better. That's what matters.”
Raiders coach, Antonio Pierce, also commented on the game and said, “We talked about it as a team yesterday and we ignored it.” According to NFL.com, he insisted, “It's over.”
