Olympic Fencers Say Town Was ‘College of Senior Athletes’

With their successful trip to Paris over, the members of Team USA’s fencing team headed back for their week-long residency inside the Olympic Village.
Jackie Dubrovich again Maia Weintraub – one part of the women’s foil team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the first team gold in American history – spoke exclusively Us Weekly from the Village grounds, which haven’t exactly received raves from all the French athletes, but they didn’t seem to care.
“It’s a college for very athletic seniors,” Dubrovich, 30, said with a laugh. “It’s delicious! With the tournaments coming to a close, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. People are more likely to go out of their way to talk to other people, meet people and party.”
Dubrovich continued, “That’s part of the fun of the Olympics. When you’re done competing, you meet all these people from all over the world and have a great time together.”
Regarding how the team can look like inside the Village, Dubrovich explained that no one should expect an angry person – at least not for Olympic reasons.
“The house is dry,” he said. “So we can’t have a party in the Village, but it’s Paris. There are places you can go.”
However, as they bask in the glow of their gold medals – the duo won the team gold as well Lee Kiefer again Lauren Scruggs – Weintraub, 21, said the team doesn’t have much time to celebrate.
“I think we have future plans for that,” he said suggestively. “Because of all the chaos and media attention, which was great for sports, we didn’t have a chance to digest what we did and celebrate what we achieved.”
In fact, Weintraub said he and his colleagues were preparing for Paris’ big night on the town.
“I was getting ready with Jackie the other night,” Weintraub said. “We went to bed early. Let’s look at some Emily in Paris. Now we are ready.”
Despite the Village’s positive reviews, Dubrovich admitted that the conditions weren’t four stars across the board.
“They are not luxury residences,” he said. “We have cardboard beds. It’s hot. It’s summertime in Europe. I would not say that Europe is known for its central air system. All of those things are real to us right now. “
Still, those minor complaints are a small price to pay for bringing their favorite sport to the center of the Olympic conversation.
“What we hope will come out of this is that the sport continues to grow, especially before LA 2028,” Dubrovich said of the next Summer Games. “That’s really the priority. This game is good, I don’t see any reason why it can’t be as big as some of the tent games we see in this country.”
He continued, “If you think about it, we’re actually just fighting with swords. Very sweet.”
