Newborn twins were killed in Gaza while their father was at the local government office to register their birth.

Asser, a boy, and Ayssel, a girl, were only four days old when their father Mohammed Abu al-Qumsan went to collect their birth certificates.

While he was away, his neighbors called saying that their house in Deir al Balah had been bombed.

The Israeli strike also killed his wife and the twins’ grandmother.

“I don’t know what happened,” she said. “I was told it was a shell that hit the house.”

“I didn’t have time to celebrate them,” he added.

The Health Department in Gaza, which is run by Hamas, says that 115 children were born and killed during the war.

According to the AP news agency, the family followed the order to leave Gaza City in the early weeks of the Israel-Gaza war, seeking shelter in the middle of the conflict, as ordered by the Israeli army.

The BBC has asked the Israeli military for comment on the strike, and is awaiting a response.

Israel it says it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas operating in densely populated areas, including using public buildings as shelters.

But officials rarely comment on individual strikes.

Several such shelters in Gaza have been attacked in the past few weeks.

On Saturday, i Israeli air strike on school building Sheltering homeless Palestinians in Gaza City has killed more than 70 people, a hospital director told the BBC.

An Israeli army spokesman said the school “serves as a military center for Hamas and Islamic Jihad”, which Hamas has denied.

Israel disputed the death toll, but the BBC could not independently obtain figures from either side.

Hamas-led gunmen killed around 1,200 people during an attack on Israel on October 7, and took another 251 back to Gaza as hostages.

That attack led to a major Israeli military offensive in Gaza and the current war.

More than 39,790 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli campaign, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in Gaza.
