Marvel Sure Is Being Cagey About Joe Locke's Agatha All Along Character

Witches are by nature mysterious—and that extends to Marvel's WandaVision repentance, Agatha Everything Goes, which will follow Kathryn Hahn's breakout character as she assembles a coven to accompany her on a dark mission. But how is Agatha encouraged to start her career? Look at the character of Joe Locke, as mysterious as all this.

In a new feature for Empire Magazine, showrunner Jac Schaeffer describes Locke's role as, yes, a “mysterious youth” who gives Agatha the idea to take the Wizarding Road in an attempt to find her magical powers. Locke himself says his name in the script is literally “New,” in the good Marvel tradition of keeping certain twists close to the vest until it's time to reveal them.

Ever since Locke was announced for the series, Marvel fans have speculated that he's playing Wiccan—aka Billy Kaplan—a magical Little Avenger who's actually the reincarnated soul of one of Wanda and Vision's twin sons. In the comics, both Billy and Tommy were made from fragments of Mephisto's soul when Wanda grew up, eventually reborn after the twins were erased from being young adults who grew up completely unaware of their connection to Wanda, even after they redeveloped their superpowers. So even if “Teen” really is something Billy, there's a good chance he wouldn't know about it at the time Agatha Everything Goes.

“He is a normal person; he's like a coven assistant,” said Locke in this magazine. “Young people are very fond of witchcraft and witches, so to be taken under the wing of Agatha Harkness and unite and walk the path of witches is their dream. He is fanboy-esque, and in his part. Most exciting—because I was [too]!”

He also made a comparison that feels unexpected, given what we've seen Agatha Everything Goes so far: “Jac sent [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige pictured on the set of Witches' Road and replied, 'Oh my God, we're building The Goons.'That's what I've been saying—that we're doing this adventure series.”

Witches plus superpowers plus The Goons plus (rumor has it) musical numbers? Agatha Everything Goes I can't get here soon—and we won't have long to wait. It arrives on Disney+ September 18 with a two-episode premiere.
