“I’m doing well!” Gifford, 70, told Entertainment Tonight in a statement published on Wednesday, July 31. “I’m happy to be out of the hospital. Although all those people are nice to me, they took good care of me, but there is no place like home.”
Now back home, Gifford said she continues to undergo physical therapy every day. “They have to get you up and moving. You don’t want your bones to lose strength,” she said. “It could be anywhere from three months to, you know, just a month for who knows? I just have to listen to them this time.”
Gifford had hip surgery earlier this month, he said People on July 16 that his recovery has been “one of the most painful situations of my entire life.”
“I walked, I rode, I walked, and my doctor said, ‘Kathie, no. You must realize that this is serious.’ And I’m gone in two days,” he said. “I stopped all my medications in three days, and I did a lot. I just do so much because I am who I am.”
Preferring to do things at his own pace, Gifford revealed to him People Wednesday that he “delivered 300 books by myself” at a Nashville book signing for his new novel. One day later, he tripped and broke his hip.
“It didn’t take much, because I was weak in that area,” the first Today explained the manager. “And the next thing you know, I’m back in the hospital with a broken hip, front and back. That hurts more than anything I’ve been through with my hip. The pelvis hurts beyond belief. However, I am here.”
This incident is one that Gifford described as “humble,” noting that he chose to stay in the hospital for a week because he “didn’t feel confident.” She told the newspaper: “You think you know your body and the next thing you know, your body changes as you get older. And as much as I don’t want to think about it, I am. “
Gifford continued to joke that it was “everyone’s summer but me.” But it’s okay.” He noted that some of his future plans include going to “his little farm one of these days and sticking around[ing] my feet in a pool of salt.”
He continued: “The Lord is telling me that it is time for me to slow down.” I’ve been running all my life. The Lord tells me, ‘You planted a gazillion roses. Try to smell them.’”
