Last year was kind of a mixed bag of blockbusters at the box office, many of them underperforming in one way or another. Not so in 2024, as Deadpool and Wolverine has already broken some records in its opening weekend and is poised to kill any ideas the superhero genre was on its last legs in 2023.

Domestically, the MCU's mutant teamup flick opened to $205 million, well past initial estimates of $160-$170 million. It is now the eighth largest opening ever and has dethroned the first dynasty Deadpool for the big R-rated launch. Other records broken include the biggest domestic opening for leading men Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, the biggest opening for the month of July and 2024 overall, and the fifth biggest superhero launch, again The biggest launch since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. An additional $233.3 million from international markets currently puts it at $438.3 million, the biggest worldwide opening since Avatar: The Path of Water.

With all that put in place, it will probably hit a billion dollars by mid-August, if not next week. People love Wolverine and Deadpool, which is made even better by the fact that this film is the end of the MCU in 2024 and guest appearances are sprinkled throughout the film. Even if you've already seen it, chances are it warrants a repeat viewing or two just to catch up on what you missed or to catch up with the rest of the audience. Marvel was very happy to reveal the success of the film at SDCC this weekend, when producer Kevin Feige revealed that the entire MCU has now passed 30 billion dollars, becoming the first company to do so.

As for everything else, the remaining summer movies so far are holding their own. Disney won another with Within 2, now to beat The Incredibles 2 to become the biggest animated film domestically with $613.4 million and $1.5 billion worldwide. Twisters it managed to gross $221.2 million worldwide, with a new domestic total of $155.6 million. long legs, which only played in the US, has become Neon's biggest film with a gross of $58.6 million. So far, it has not found an international distributor, but if it does, that traction will increase due to strong word of mouth.

Now we jump to August, which can be a dead end for movies. The month starts with M. Night Shyamlan's You are a trap (August 2), followed The Borderlands again Cucumber (August 9), and Alien: Romulus on August 16. How will they be able to withstand the wave of Reynolds and Jackman cursing up a storm and tormenting each other?
