Cate Blanchett he didn’t cash out the biggest check during his time in Middle-earth.
The actress, who played Galadriel in Peter Jackson‘s epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy (and The Hobbit prequels), was asked about his “biggest paycheck ever” for acting in a movie during an appearance on the Wednesday, August 7, episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. And the answer surprised even the host Andy Cohen.
Blanchett, 55, was taken aback when Cohen speculated that her big paycheck was “probably The Lord of the Rings,” he replied, “Are you kidding me?”
“No, no one was paid to make that film,” he said.
Cohen then asked Blanchett if she was getting the “back piece.” The actress replied, “No, it was before that…no, nothing.”
“I wanted to work with a guy who did the job Braindead,” the Oscar winner explained of his role, referring to Jackson’s 1992 horror/comedy movie.
Blanchett added, “I mean, I got free sandwiches and I got to save my ears.” (The actress wore pointy ears to complete Galadriel’s elven appearance in the franchise.)
“No, no one has been paid anything,” he emphasized.
As for her biggest payday to date, Blanchett played coy, saying, “No, not always. Women don’t get paid what you think they get paid.”
Blanchett’s latest role is as the legendary villain Lilith in the film adaptation of the video game The Borderlands. On Tuesday, August 6, the actress rocked a 102-pound dress at the film’s Los Angeles premiere.
Star stylist Elizabeth Stewart shared a video on Instagram of Blanchett showing off her look before walking the red carpet, and captioned it, “Got a ring and it’s @louisvuitton #CateBlanchett headed to the @borderlandsfilm premiere wearing – believe it or not – a top made of spoons 102 from @hoda_kova.”
Hodakova is a sustainable European fashion label that uses deadstock and recycled materials to create “pieces of art.”
On Wednesday, Stewart shared a photo of Blanchett posing on the red carpet in a Hodakova dress and captioned it, “A whole new definition of Spooning!”
The Borderlands follows a ragtag group of friends led by Blanchett’s Lilith, who returns to her home world of Pandora after being recruited to find the weapons maker Atlas’ (Edgar Ramírez) lost daughter. The film is expensive Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Gina Gershon again Jack Black.
