Carlos Alcaraz will return to the hard courts against Gael Monfils or Alexei Popyrin following Saturday’s Cincinnati Open draw.
The Spaniard has not competed at the top level since reaching the quarter-finals in Miami in March but arrives in Cincinnati with fond memories, having reached the final last year.

The 21-year-old, who won majors at Roland Garros and Wimbledon this year, is chasing his sixth ATP Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati. Alcaraz has been booked to face Holger Rune in the third round, while the Dane starts against former Top 10 star Matteo Berrettini in the first round match.
Alcaraz could still meet seventh-seeded Casper Ruud or ninth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals, with fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev a possible semi-final opponent. Medvedev, who won in Cincinnati in 2019, starts against Jiri Lehecka or Mariano Navone.
Lorenzo Musetti, a bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, will play Medvedev in the third round, while fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz or tenth seed Tommy Paul could wait in the last eight. Hurkacz reached the semifinals in Cincinnati last year, while Paul is making his fifth appearance.
Top seed Jannik Sinner will play Tallon Griekspoor or qualifier in his opening match. The Italian, who became the first player to enter this year’s Nitto ATP Finals on Saturday following his third-round victory in Montreal, is in the same category as sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev. Rublev starts against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Zhang Zhizhen of China. Sinner, who has lost four times this year, is set to play Ugo Humbert in the third round.
Third seed Alexander Zverev is likely to be a semi-finalist for Sinner. Zverev will face either Karen Khachanov or Francisco Cerundolo in his opening match. Washington champion Sebastian Korda could be a third-round opponent, with either American Ben Shelton or Grigor Dimitrov booked to play Germany in the last eight. Shelton will face Reilly Opelka in the first round.
The ATP Masters 1000 hard court event begins on Monday, with the final taking place on Monday 19 August.
