Missed the Olympics? Here’s everything we know about the 2028 games in Los Angeles

Although it is true that we will always have Paris, time stands still for anyone. The 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles are only 1,428 days away. This is the third time the tinsel town has hosted the athletics tournament, so the town knows the honor and the challenges that come with it. There is a debt of gratitude to 1932 and 1984 for those lessons.
Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event, also known as LA28.
What are the dates of the LA 2028 Olympics?
The games will begin with the traditional opening ceremony on July 14, 2028. Sixteen days later, the competition comes to an end with another ceremony on July 30, 2028. The Paralympics will follow from August 15 to 27.
What areas are the LA28 used in?
The good thing about hosting the third in Los Angeles is that the basic infrastructure is already in place and will just require some updating of the events. The City of Angels used this as a selling point in its campaign to host the games.
While some details are still being worked out, here’s what we know so far about where the events will be held.
The athletes will be housed at UCLA instead of building a new Olympic Village. Gymnastics will loan the Arena (also known as Crypto.com Arena) to the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Sparks for the summer. The dive will take place at the 1932 Pool in Exposition Park.
The LA Memorial Coliseum, of course, will get in on the action as well, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies as well as some of the tournaments. A swimming pool will be built at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. This will be the largest Olympic swimming stadium ever, with a capacity of 38,000 fans.
Other cities also offer their own venues for the big event. Long Beach will host a marathon swim, triathlon, and sailing. Temecula hosts Equestrian events. In addition, Oklahoma City will assist with canoe slalom and softball.
What new sporting events are planned for LA28?
The amazing fact is that the Olympic Games change every four years. Only four disciplines have been included every year since 1896: athletics, fencing, swimming, and artistic gymnastics.
For the 2020 Summer Games, the International Olympic Committee has created an approved group of core sports that must remain part of the competition. The host city is free to suggest up to six games of your choice to add to the mix.
Los Angeles has selected cricket, lacrosse, baseball/softball, squash, and flag football. Cricket, lacrosse, and baseball/softball have all been to the Olympics before. Squash and flag football will be playing for the first time in the Olympics.
What about hacking and boxing?
Breaking is out in 2028. The show premiered in Paris, but before those performances began, the decision was made to move it to Los Angeles. Many are disappointed with this decision, especially since this sport originates from the United States.
Victor Montalvo took it all in stride and was grateful that wrestling made it to the Olympics at all. “I feel like we did our job,” he reflected on his competitors USA Today. “Everybody loved it. The crowd was going crazy. That’s right. We are not in 2028, but to be honest, (I am) the first one to get a bronze medal to break. So, it’s a wonderful thing to say.”
As for boxing, it has not been officially added to the list of players, although it may have a better ending than breaking out. In June 2023, the IOC stopped recognizing the International Boxing Association due to allegations of corruption. A new governing body is needed for the sport to secure its Olympic future.
Will cars be allowed at the LA Olympics?
Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, is sticking to her promise of a free Olympic Games. If you’ve been to the place, you’re right to be skeptical.
“We’re a very car-dependent city, but it means if you’re going to go to any of the stadiums, you’re going to have to take public transportation,” Bass told CNN. “We’ve been building our plan, but we’re going to need a lot of buses, thousands of buses from neighboring cities and counties to help us deliver that.”
