Marcelo Melo and Alexander Zverev played very well until they won the first round on Wednesday at the Cincinnati Open.
The Brazilian-German duo crushed home favorites Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-4, 6-7(5), 10-2 in a grueling 85-minute battle at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Ohio. Melo and Zverev won the match tie-break to win after winning 84 percent (38/45) of the points after their first match, according to Infosys ATP Stats.
The fourth Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic will be Melo and Zverev who will play with them in the second round. The clash will be the second Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting between the two teams, after Melo and Zverev won in the semi-finals in Monte-Carlo in April.
Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten have won three tour titles together, including a major at Wimbledon, since their first partnership in April. The seventh-seeded pair were forced to retire due to controversy last week in Montreal after clashing heads, but returned to winning ways in Cincinnati, where they defeated wild cards Brandon Nakashima and William Woodall 6-4, 6-3. Heliovaara and Patten next face Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic.
Ivan Dodig and Jamie Murray also won early Wednesday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Croatian-British pair booked their place in the second round with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory against singles stars Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev.
