Candace Cameron Bure: Full House Crew Celebrates 20 Pound Weight Loss

Candace Cameron Bure shows growing up in front of the camera – including the pressure to look a certain way on screen.

I Full house alum, 48, opened up about how the cast of the beloved family sitcom applauded her 20-pound weight loss over the course of her teenage years on the Monday, Aug. 12, episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast. Bure, who played the eldest daughter DJ Tanner, shared her story after the show Danielle Fishel asked if he had ever been written about his weight, like Fishel, 43, and himself Boy Meets World the costar Is Fridle he did.

“I had lost, like, 20 pounds from the end of one season to the next,” Bure began. “I came in and lost 20 pounds, but they thought it was too much and they were like, ‘Oh, for the opening credits, why don’t we have it on the exercise bike, just to promote that.’ And looking back, I don’t think that was a bad thing. I’m working really hard to lose 20 pounds.”

He continued, “But the season before I had that episode where it was like, Kimmy [played by Andrea Barber] and I was going to a pool party and I didn’t want to wear a bathing suit, so I went on a crash diet to try to lose weight in a week so I wouldn’t feel bad in a bathing suit, and then she passed out at the gym. And those are things that many of us experience. But yeah, you know, you play it on TV and sometimes it’s like…

Bure went on to reveal that the writers asked him and his parents in advance if he was comfortable doing an episode like this.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, sure,’ but when you’re in it and you’re doing it, it feels awkward,” he added.

Fishel, who portrayed Topanga Lawrence in the Boy Meets World during its seventh season, she also shared her story about her weight gain in an episode, titled, “She’s Having My Baby Back Ribs.” In a season 7 episode, she and Eric (Friedle, 48) go out on a date in college, which prompts Cory (her on-screen husband played by Ben Savage) to think you are pregnant.

“I remember when they called me to the office and told me that they would go to it, it was not really as they asked,” recalls Fishel. “They just said, ‘You know, we want you here.’ You guys are obviously a little overweight, so we’re going to write an episode about it, and we wanted you to know. And here it will be. It’s going to be really funny.’”

The actor noted that Friedle had a positive attitude about the episode at the time, which made him even more insecure.

“I remember the hardest thing for me was that meeting because Will was like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’m fine!’ Immediately, what I know now is that he was insecure and it was painful and powerful for him, but I didn’t know that,” he continued. “And to me it was like, ‘Oh, wow.’ No one had ever said anything to me about it. I was aware that I was gaining weight, but I was still, you know, a size four. So I remember thinking, ‘Wow, these people think I’m fat enough [that] we should write a whole episode about my obesity.’”

Bure starred Full house during its eight season run from 1987 to 1995, he later reprized his role in the Netflix spinoff series, Fuller Housewhich also starred OG cast members Barber, 48, and Jodie Sweetin.
