One person died when a raging wildfire reached the suburbs of Athens in Greece on Monday.

The body, believed to be that of a woman, was found inside a shop in the town of Vrilissia, north of Athens, a fire source told the BBC.

Thousands of people have been evacuated after firefighters warned that homes, businesses and schools are at risk, as the fires are expected to continue until Tuesday.

Firefighters spokesman Vassilios Vathrakogiannis said there were many “hot spots” in the northeastern region of Attica, but there were signs of improvement on Tuesday night.

Greece just experienced the hottest June and July on record.

More than 700 firefighters, 199 and 35 bomber planes are working to extinguish the blaze, which first broke out on Sunday afternoon 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of the Greek capital.

Flights were forced to land as the night began on Monday, but work on the ground will continue through the night.

In unprecedented incidents, Athenians wore masks to protect themselves from the smoke that swept through the city.
