Here’s Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal Up in the Air
Monday’s gymnastics competition marked the final event in the women’s gym. Finally, Brazil Rebeka Andrade he took home gold, Bilesi took silver and Jordan and copper. But first, two Romanian gymnasts –Ana Barbosu again Sabrina Maneca-Voinea – tied for third and fourth place with the same score of 13.700.
Meanwhile, Jordan Chiles placed fifth with 13.600 points. One minute and four seconds after the judges scored these points, the American coach appealed the case, saying that the low scores were due to Jordan’s difficulty. Coach Celile Landi raised the score by 0.1, the judges agreed with the appeal, placing Jordan in third place above Ana and Sabrina.
The Romanian Olympic Committee followed up with a letter of appeal. On Saturday (August 10), the Court of Arbitration (CAS) issued a decision to dismiss the appeal that won Chile’s bronze medal and returned to the original points. This means that Jordan is now considered to be in fifth place. The International Gymnastics Federation is yet to announce whether it will officially strip Chile of its medal or award bronze to the three gymnasts involved.
Following the announcement, Chiles announced a hiatus from social media due to his “mental health.” Meanwhile, his sister went public with the CAS decision, citing discrimination as the reason for the five-day delay.
