The Hamas-controlled security organization in Gaza says dozens of people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school shelter in Gaza City.
The Israeli military said it had raided the area on Saturday, describing its target as a Hamas compound centered around a school.
According to the Civil Defense Department in Gaza, the strike in the Daraj region killed at least 90 people and injured dozens.
The BBC could not independently verify the figures.
“The number of dead is between 90 and 100 and there are many injured,” said the agency’s spokesperson Mahmud Bassal told AFP.
“Three Israeli rockets hit a school occupied by displaced Palestinians.”
Earlier in a Telegram post, he described the scene as a “horrible massacre” saying that workers were trying to control the fire to rescue the injured and remove the bodies.
Israel’s military said it had “attacked Hamas terrorists operating under a Hamas center centered on the Al-Taba’een school”.
Earlier this week, the Israeli Defense Forces said it had targeted Hamas “command and control centers” in two schools in Gaza City.
Hamas-led gunmen killed around 1,200 people during an attack on Israel on October 7, and took another 251 back to Gaza as hostages.
That attack triggered a major Israeli military offensive in Gaza and an ongoing war.
More than 39,600 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli campaign, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in Gaza.
