Determining how to maximize the points and miles earned on most credit cards can be difficult and time-consuming — and it may seem trivial if you’re not on the go. For both of these reasons, some people choose cash back credit cards.
Among them, the Discover it Cash Back card offers 5% cash back on the first $1,500 in purchases you make each quarter at select retailers, which changes every three months. These retailers usually include gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and more. Discover it Cash Back doesn’t offer a regular sign-up bonus, but it does offer a unique income opportunity for new cardholders.
Discover will match all your earnings during the first 12 consecutive pay periods when your new account is open. The game for the whole year takes place at the end of the 12th payment period. That means the earning rates on this card double in the first year, making it a great deal if you use this card regularly in those first 12 months.

First, let’s consider some benefits of the card:
- There are no foreign transaction fees
- Free overnight shipping for card replacements to any US street address
- Set up your account in seconds to block new purchases with an on/off switch available on both the mobile app and website
- A free credit card that includes your credit score, number of recent inquiries and more
- Free alerts you can activate that let you know if your Social Security number is available on any of the thousands of dark web sites.
That’s nothing to write home about if you’re used to earning travel benefits, but it’s a pretty good list of common benefits for an annual cash-back card.

Cash back with Discover it Cash Back
Discover it Cash Back earns 5% cash back with different merchants each quarter you sign up, such as gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, Amazon.com and more.
You need to use the 5% tiers before you buy into the bonus tier each quarter — but Discover makes the process easy online, and you can activate it up to two months before each quarter starts.
However, you will only earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter at eligible merchants. Assuming you spend $1,500 on purchases at 5% installments during the quarter you activate the bonus, you’ll earn $75 in cash back on these purchases.
You’ll also get 1% cash back on every other purchase with Discover it Cash Back. You may want to improve your cash back percentage on other purchases by using another card with a better lower rate benefit or increased rewards in select categories. One example is Discover it Miles, which match the money you earn during your first year.

Using Discover it Cash Back
Some cards get cash back rewards but then make it difficult to get your cash back. This is one area where the Discover it Cash Back card excels. There are many options and many will let you earn as little as a penny in cash back.
These options include:
- Instant gift cards or eCertificates, starting at $20
- Donations are donations to select charities, starting at one cent
- Credit to your account, starting with a cent
- Electronic deposit to any account of your choice, starting with a cent
- Pay with Cashback Bonus at selected merchants, starting with cents
In all but one of these options, your refund is worth its face value. Gift cards can be an exception – some are available with a bonus. For example, you may be able to find some retailers that offer a $25 or $30 gift card for $20 cash back.
If you shop through any of these sellers, this will give you the best value. If not, TPG editor Emily Thompson would recommend just using the credit on your account — instead of using a gift card, you can charge other purchases to your credit card and earn more rewards.

Is Discover it Cash Back worth it?
If you are a beginner or want to add more bonus categories to your cash back strategy, Discover it Cash Back is a great choice. However, if you’re looking for consistent bonus categories or a long list of benefits, you’ll want to go with a different card.
Bottom line
Discover it Cash Back offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter in rotating installments. The card has no annual fee, so it’s an easy choice to add to your wallet for use in these categories each quarter — especially if you’ve already maxed out your Chase 5/24 slots.
However, the potential cash back in these 5% tiers is limited to the first $1,500 in purchases each quarter and you’ll only earn 1% cash back on all other purchases, so this shouldn’t be your go-to everyday card.
