This weekend marks the one year anniversary of its establishment Baldur’s Gate 3 and its first launch on PC. Larian’s fantasy RPG was a huge hit for Hasbro: not only was it one of the biggest games of 2023, it became an almost instant hit and racked up tons of year-end awards. Naturally, people kept asking for more, and it turns out that Larian really thought about giving it to them.

In a recent interview with PCGamer, Larian CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the team had considered staying in the area. Pits & Dragons set after wrapping up development on their blockbuster hit. Everyone was “at risk” of doing more and had fever for production, so they explored a possible expansion (or standalone title) where they would just have to “add more levels or make new stories.” Then, they realized that the expansion wouldn’t be worth the effort, and things grew into a full sequel. It sounds a little playable, but it probably wouldn’t arrive until 2027.

What finally stopped the idea from continuing over time: action Baldur’s Gate 3 it took several years, and “doing the same thing” again didn’t sound very appealing. Vincke expressed these thoughts during a company meeting, and everyone agreed that he should go ahead and not make a sequel or expansion, period. He would later confirm the studio’s plans to the public at GDC 2024, and it sounds like it was a great call. He called the decision a godsend, and it probably helped that all of Larian’s Wizards Coast teammates who helped make the game were suspended late last year.

It would be easy for Larian to relax Baldur’s Gate 3’s laurels, but Vincke wants to “look at how we can do the things we enjoy.” The studio is now working on two similar projects (one is titled “Excalibur”), and he sounded excited to be “making our own again.” We are not reforming, we are not trying to change laws from 50 years ago into something new. The morale is so high, you cannot explain or express, how free we are. “

Given how big it is Baldur’s Gate 3 then, Hasbro and Wizards are probably looking for another studio to carry the torch. It might be a while before we hear anything about it, but until then, Larian’s song is there along with a lotta gameplay and an epilogue at the end waiting for you.
