Matthew Ebden and John Peers pulled off a thrilling comeback and ended a tense Match Tie-break on Saturday afternoon in Paris. Now, they are Olympic champions.

The unseeded Australian pair defeated Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram 6-7(6), 7-6(1), 10-8 in the gold medal match. After recovering from a high point, Ebden and Peers produced their best tennis for the first Lexus ATP Head2Head team match to win and spark jubilant celebrations on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Neither team had dropped a set en route to the final and fourth-seeded Krajicek and Ram were on course to complete a perfect week in the French capital when they led by a set and a break. However, as they did in the first set, Ebden and Peers rallied from 2-4 down to force a tie break in the second. This time they won it, producing a masterful Match Tie-break display.

The Australians took a 9/5 lead on the score, but were sweating it out as Krajicek and Ram saved the first three points of their four gold medal opponents. Ebden and Peers kept their cool to convert fourth, however, and secure a gold medal in just their fifth event as a team.

With their two-hour, four-minute victory, the 36-year-old duo won Australia’s second gold medal in Olympic Tennis Event history. No. 3 and No. 59 in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings, respectively, Ebden and Peers join ATP Tour champions Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, who won in Atlanta 1996, as Australian tennis champions.

In the bronze medal match, Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul secured their place on the Olympic stage for the first time by defeating Czech duo Tomas Machac and Adam Pavlasek 6-3, 6-4.

The strength of Top 20 singles players Fritz and Paul proved decisive in the 70-minute match. The third seed fired 23 winners and converted three of his 11 break points to ensure the United States leaves Paris 2024 with two men’s tennis medals.

Olympic debutant Fritz and partner Paul were in their second level singles final, having reached that stage again on the Queen’s Club lawn in 2022. After Krajicek and Ram previously earned silver, Fritz and Paul are the sixth American team. winning the men’s doubles medal since the return of the Olympic Tennis Event in 1988.
