5 Best Hotels in Mexico City (Updated 2024)
[ad_1]
Mexico City is a great city full of delicious food, exciting nightlife, amazing art, spacious parks, and cool places. I’m a latecomer (I just went for the first time a few years ago), and I can’t believe I haven’t made the trip yet. It’s an amazing city.
Also known as CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico), Mexico City is a world-class place to visit. But it’s also a big, crowded city. There are plenty of hotels here, and choosing the right one is important to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable stay.
Having been to the city a few times (and even leading a tour there), I know which hotels are worth your money. Here is my list of what I think are the best hotels in Mexico City:
1. Zócalo Central Mexico City
Housed in a late 19th-century building right in the Zócalo (the city’s main square), you can’t find a more central location than this four-star hotel. The rooftop bar has an amazing view of the square, and I love that a luxurious breakfast is served here every morning (you can find both Mexican dishes and continental breakfasts like yogurt and granola). There are also free bicycles for guests, a fitness center, and a steam room. A really unique place they offer is a 24/7 cafe in the lobby where everything is polite to the guests (it offers things like coffee, tea, cakes, fruits, sandwiches, and other snacks). There are also free water and fruit coolers on every floor. (If only all hotels had amenities like these!)
The guest rooms have a historic, moody feel, with swirling gray walls, dark hardwood floors, wooden ceilings, and even chandeliers. Even if you’re right in the square, you won’t hear a thing once you close the double-glazed windows, allowing you to sleep well at night. All rooms have a desk, extra-sized TV, AC, safe, and coffee maker. Bathrooms are small but have showers with excellent water pressure and complimentary toiletries. This is an excellent choice if you want to be close to many areas of the city.
2. Hotel Villa Condesa
This boutique building in Condesa is as leafy and stylish as its surroundings. It is housed in a 19th century mansion and has a really cool inner courtyard which is a peaceful place in the big city. A hearty breakfast is served here every morning too (try the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros)!
All fifteen spacious and comfortable suites are unique. Some are brightly decorated with colorful walls and sofas, while others have an elegant feel, with antique furniture and hardwood floors. Some rooms have a balcony, but all rooms come with a flat-screen TV and a desk. Bathrooms are small but include free toiletries and luxury showers. Since there are only a few rooms here, it really feels like home (the staff is really friendly and welcoming), making it the perfect place for a quiet stay in one of Mexico City’s best neighborhoods.
3. Gran Hotel Ciudad de México
This historic Art Nouveau hotel was built as a department store in 1899 and converted into a hotel for the 1968 Olympics. Featured in several James Bond films, this five-star property has an impressive interior lobby with a beautiful Tiffany stained glass ceiling and iron and wood elevators. In the Zócalo, there are two restaurants serving Mexican food and a fitness center. I especially like that you can view the Zócalo while enjoying the extensive breakfast buffet. The only drawback of being right on the main square is that it can be noisy if your room faces the square. (I personally prefer to sit a little quieter, so you can ask for an inside room if that’s the case for you too.)
The large rooms include antique wooden furniture in keeping with the history of the hotel (suites with four-poster beds and curtains). Whether you choose a room or a suite, you will have a large TV, a large work desk, a sitting area, a safe, a coffee maker, and a mini bar. The marble bathrooms are spacious as well, with bathrobes, slippers, and toiletries provided. Some even have both tubs and walk-in showers. Overall, this is the best choice for history buffs who will focus on seeing the sites around the Zócalo.
4. Green Park Hotel
Housed in a beautiful Art Deco building, the Green Park Hotel is directly across from the lush green Chapultepec Park (the largest park in the city). It’s also in the middle of Polanco, a luxury district known as the “Beverly Hills of Mexico.” The rooftop bar is a fun place to hang out, and there’s also a delicious breakfast (although I personally don’t think it’s anything to write home about).
All rooms are large suites decorated in an English royal style, with beautiful wooden furniture, hardwood floors, and paintings on the walls. I especially love the arched to ceiling windows that offer views of the nearby park or yard. The luxury suites have beautiful desks, sitting areas, and smart TVs. The large marble bathrooms have a jacuzzi and walk-in shower as well as complimentary toiletries and luxury bathrobes. It’s a great choice for a refined stay in a classy setting.
5. Ágata Hotel
If you’re looking for something in a completely different part of the city, this excellent hotel is located in bohemian Coyoacán, a place made famous by Frida Kahlo (her home, now a museum, is less than a ten-minute walk away). This boutique property has only four rooms, and the staff really go out of their way to ensure a personalized stay. A hearty healthy breakfast is cooked to order, and you can choose from a variety, including chia seed pudding, freshly made eggs, and lots of fresh fruit. I love that it is also used on the terrace.
The spacious rooms are decorated in soft neutral tones, with wooden accents and attractive ceiling lights that look like cool, upside-down woven baskets. All rooms have a seating area, Nespresso machine, safe, large size TVs while selected rooms offer a balcony. The bathrooms are stunning, with exposed brick walls, deep soaking tubs, walk-in showers, luxurious robes, and luxury toilets. This hotel is almost like a luxury residence, making it a great place to stay in peace and intimacy.
I love Mexico City. There are an endless number of museums, great restaurants, and excellent mezcal bars to explore here. I think it is one of the most fascinating cultural sites in the world and a city that most people visiting Mexico need to visit. Just be sure to choose a hotel from the list above to ensure you have a great stay at your destination!
