During the interview no Haley Welch (aka Hawk Tuah Girl) on the Monday, July 29 episode of his “Club Random” podcast, Maher, 68, criticized the pop star's behavior during the early days of his relationship with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I'm sure he's a lovely person, but everything is about the footballer,” said Maher. “I just felt like 35 is too old to say, 'My boyfriend is a football player and I wear his jersey to the game with his number on it!' I mean, come on.”

Welch, 21, defended Swift, 34, from Maher's barbs, saying, “Whatever makes her happy. If that's what he wants to do and it makes him happy, it has nothing to do with me.”

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce can all talk about them. Swift and Kelce were first linked in July 2023 when the Kansas City Chiefs team shared that they tried to ask Swift out after attending his Eras Tour. “I was a bit shy and couldn't give him one of the rings […]

Despite agreeing wistfully with Welch, Maher couldn't help but continue to criticize high-class romance.

“You will abandon him, but, you know that?” Maher said. “With him, it's like Gatorade at the Super Bowl, you know you're going to get dumped. You just don't know when.”

Welch, a self-proclaimed fan of Swift's music, said she was “a big fan of her growing up” and reflected on the prospect of what the differences of opinion might mean.

“You have to think about it this way,” Welch told Maher. “If he does that, can you imagine the next album we're going to come out with?”

He added, “It's not going to be 'f–k John Mayer' ain't no more 'f–k Travis,” a reference to Swift's previous relationship with the “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer, which led to Swift writing songs like 2010's “Dear John.”

Maher, who once had an opinion on Swift's life, asked, “That was a long time ago. Are you still singing about that?”

The comedian suggested that Swift's continued singing about her elders is “too bad” and said it might be time for Swift to change the script.

“It seems to be a recurring theme,” he countered. “At some point, you just want to say, maybe you should write a song called 'Maybe It's Me.'

“It's not even on his radar,” the insider added. “Marriage is something he considers important and not something he can just jump into without thinking it through.”
