Spotify songs are back for free users

Spotify users who don't pay for a subscription can also see the lyrics of any song they listen to on the service. Back in May, the company began a wide test rollout that began last fall, requiring a paid subscription to see the lyrics to any song. Free users can still follow along with names, but only three songs per month. Now, Spotify is removing the limit so that free users can see all the lyrics they need without having to watch them.
“At Spotify, we're always testing and iterating. This means that the availability of our features can vary across categories and between markets and devices,” a Spotify spokesperson told Engadget. “In the coming weeks, we will expand the availability of Lyrics to Spotify Free users so that more people can enjoy viewing more songs, around the world. .”
As you might expect, the first move to access lyrics for free users was back at the beginning of this year. Maybe Spotify thought that doing so is a way to push people to their revised subscription tiers that start at $11 per month for music streaming. CEO Daniel Ek explained during the company's recent earnings call this month that plans are underway to improve what is offered to free users. It seems that the list of updates includes bringing back full access to snippets.
“We prioritize development of our free product pipeline based on performance in specific markets,” Ek said on the call. “Additional improvements will be added to our freebies in the coming months.”
