Harvey Weinstein hospitalized for “multiple medical conditions,” including COVID-19 and double pneumonia.
The disgraced movie mogul, 72, was moved to Bellevue Hospital's Prison Ward after developing infections, his rep said. Craig Rothfield he told NBC News and ABC News on Thursday, July 25.
Weinstein was hospitalized for “conditions that he still struggles with on a daily basis such as diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, fluid in the heart and lungs and various other conditions,” Rothfeld told the outlet. “Additionally, Mr. Weinstein tested positive for COVID-19 and was diagnosed with double pneumonia in his lungs.”
Weinstein's health problems come after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by the New York State Court of Appeals in April on the basis that the judge in the case discriminated against Weinstein with “bad” improper decisions, including the decision to allow women to testify about allegations that did not exist. it is not part of the case. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison after a judge found him guilty of sexual harassment and rape.
“We concluded that the court erroneously admitted the evidence of sex that could not be presented by anyone, allegations of previous sexual acts against people other than the plaintiffs in the basic charges,” said the court's decision, according to the report. The Associated Press. “The remedy for these great mistakes is a new trial.”
The majority of the court said that “there is an abuse of discretion to allow unexamined allegations of misconduct that destroy the character of the defendant but are unclear about their credibility regarding the charges against them.”
A lawyer Douglas H. Wigdorwho represented eight of Weinstein's victims, released a statement to Us Weekly at the time.
“Today's decision is a big step back in arresting those accused of sexual violence,” he said. “Courts often admit evidence of other uncharged acts when they assist jurors in understanding issues related to the defendant's intent, modus operandi or plan. The judge was instructed on the validity of this evidence and the annulment of the decision is painful because it will require the victims to endure yet another crime.”
Weinstein is currently awaiting a retrial in Manhattan Criminal Court. During the July hearing, the judge shared that jury selection will begin on November 12.
“He's eager to go to court to prove his innocence,” said Weinstein's lawyer Diana Fabi Samson he told reporters after the hearing. “Physically, he is not healthy, and that has affected his attitude.”
Although the rape conviction was overturned in New York, Weinstein is still in prison because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of other rape charges and sentenced to 16 years in prison. (He was acquitted in Los Angeles of charges involving one of the women who testified in New York.)
Weinstein was first accused of sexual harassment and assault by several women in 2017. The disgruntled filmmaker denied all allegations.
