House of the Dragon’s second season finale left us in the same place as the first season finale.
There are no dragons
House of the Dragon take out the dragons
The first series of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, features dragons almost every week. Or we would like to see them work more slowly. Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, on the other hand, will not feature any of the creatures that helped the Targaryens conquer the seven kingdoms.
The new series will take place roughly between the first series of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. The books begin by following the legendary knight Duncan the Tall before he entered the tournament at Ashford in 209 AC. That’s 80 years after House of the Dragon and 90 years before Game of Thrones. Part of the price the Targaryens paid for the civil war they fought in the House of the Dragon was the loss of their dragons. While others survived the Dance of Dragons, the last Targaryen dragon died in 153 AC.

There will be a lot of Targaryens
King Daeron II reigns, with many heirs
The House of the Beast
You might think that without the Dragons, the Targaryens might be weaker than before, but Knight of the Seven Kingdoms actually starts at one of the high places of the Targaryen dynasty. King Daeron II is king in 209 AC. He is Rhaenyra’s grandson through her son Aegon (One of her younger children who hasn’t had much screen time in House of the Dragons).
Daeron has four sons, the eldest of whom, Baelor, is considered his clear successor. This means that this regime has little stability as there is no succession problem coming. Daeron’s children should also provide plenty of Targaryen in the new series as well, as they each have their own bunches of white-haired children running around Westeros. That includes Aegon the Impossible, Daenaries’ grandfather. He is the fourth son of the fourth son of King Daeron II. Because he is so far down the line of succession, he is finally allowed to train with the main character of The Knight of the Seven Kingdom:

Say hello to Ser Duncan the Tall
Westeros’ answer to Jack Reacher
HBO
Sir Duncan the Tall is a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In the books, he is described as a large animal that is about seven meters tall. If you’ve seen Amazon’s Jack Reacher series, you’re actually Alan Richson in full armor. He works as a squire to an old traveling knight named Arlan of Pennytree. Arlan is a Hedge Knight, who makes a living traveling Westeros and competing in tournaments. When Arlan dies, Duncan trades the old man’s horse for a suit of armor and enters the tournament.

Expect to see a lot of tournament life
A medieval gladiator
HBO
While the episodes featuring the battles get all the attention, some of the best episodes of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon focus on the tournaments. Events where all the houses come together to compete in jousts and other games served as the backdrop for episodes of the first season of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Since the main character’s job is to be a tournament champion, we should get a lot of heroic actions in the new series.

There is life outside of big houses
HBO
While the book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has a lot of Targaryens, it also focuses on a lower character who travels throughout Westeros meeting different people. At some point, he’ll get into some sort of game with the Targaryens, but Duncan might end up fighting a local bully for choosing the wrong person. This should give us a chance to see what life is like for an ordinary citizen of Westeros in a way that Game of Thrones has never had the chance to show.
